The Route Jacques Cœur was born in 1954 on the initiative of the owners of the castles of Ainay-le-Vieil and Meillant. First called "Circuit of the Castles of the Heart of France", the oldest Historical Route in France offered visits as well as nocturnal discoveries and illuminations on their sites, the tone was set. Half a century later, the members have multiplied and the Route now has 18: Castles of Gien, La Verrerie, Menetou-Salon, La Chapelle-d'Angillon, Sagonne, Pesselières, Mehun-sur-Yèvre, Meillant , Ainay-le-Vieil and Peufeilhoux, the towns of Sancerre, Bourges, Aubigny-sur-Nère, Argent-sur-Sauldre, Dun-sur-Auron, Mehun-sur-Yèvre, Saint-Amand-Montrond, and the sites of Noirlac Abbey and Jacques Coeur Palace.
