Natural History Museum of Bourges

Created in 1927 by Monseigneur Foucher, the Natural History Museum is now a modern architectural structure at the service of science.
It is a place of discovery, entertainment, of wonder and its aim is to provide quality information within everyone's reach.It is also a place of research, with a scientific data bank, and is well-known for its work on bats.

The extensive collections of noted scientist Gabriel Foucher were dusted off by a dynamic new team of experts who transformed this museum into a state-of-the-art, hands-on discovery center.

The four new museum wings (“A Place for Everyone”, “Interpreting Nature”, “The Living World”, and “From the Cosmos to Your Back Yard”) lead the visitor on a voyage of discovery from the origins of the universe to the little-known, surprising fauna that populates the town’s cathedral.

There are four main sections :
► " A Place for Everyone " : the diversity of the living world, the notion of species and the role of each, with preserved exotic species : lionesses, elephants, giraffe, gazelles, antelopes, parrot trees, ornithopters...

► " Images, nature interpreted " : an iconographical representation of nature as it has accompanied man for over 30 000 years.
Used for decorative, mythical, scientific or reasons unknown, they are the source of dreams, objectivity or research
... the animals in stained glass windows, the first animal photographs, live weather reports, mites on cheese rinds seen through the electronic microscope.

► " The World of the Living " : from the most simple beings to the most complex organisms, with specimens in aquariums, vivariums or preserved.
Observe market gardening ants, learn how to recognise birds of prey, how to tell the difference between a grass-snake and a viper.

► " From Cosmos to Berry " : the history of the Earth : the great ages of our planet from geological times up to the present day.
