Today one of the world’s most renowned artists, August Rodin burst onto the late 19th century art scene with his scandalously free and seemingly unfinished sculptures.
In the years of controversy at the outset of his career, Rodin had the support of a number of men of letters, including Georges Hecq, a civil servant at the Ministry of Fine Arts originally from the Berry region of France who was soon to become one of his most faithful patrons. The works on display here, five hitherto little known bronze and marble pieces, include the moving bust of Mr. Hecq that Rodin sculpted after his friend’s death, as well as three studies for the artist’s opus, « The Gates of Hell ». Exposition "The Rodin collection of Monsieur Hecq" until August 30, 2009 in Bourges at the Museum of Decorative Arts - Hôtel Lallemant Tel. : +33 (0)2 48 57 81 17 Free entrance - Open daily except Monday and Sunday morning |
